The Zipp 808’s are much like the 404’s except deeper and with a few less spokes. In these rims, Zipp uses more material making them stronger, and balances the scale by using less spokes, saving weight, and keeping them strong as an ox. Zipp then sets an industry benchmark by utilizing their proprietary Firecrest rim shape to create a deeper section rim that is more stable in a cross wind and is the fastest non disc wheel at all practical wind angles.
Flat terrain is hard to come by in our neck of the woods and our quest for flat ground forced us up and down every climb in northern Marin. The 808’s are 1519g and throughout all that climbing we never noticed any extra baggage. Once the road plunged into the depths of the redwoods we found confidence inspiring stability and graciously smooth braking at our fingertips. Transitioning was actually a blast for such a deep wheel even through the most demanding decreasing radii and around every off-camber corner. You could say we had a gravitational experience. The ultimate reality of the 808’s was achieved while hammering away on open roads, towing friends in our slipstream, and listening to the silent roar of the Firecrest putting the wind in its proper place.
The Zipp 808’s naturally belong on machines built for speed and efficiency with intent to destroy a PR or break a world record. However, we’ve found them to be fun, fast, and stable enough for everyday riding and even more fun ripping it up on the weekend group ride. At Above Category we choose 808’s for most of our TT and Tri builds and any other time we want to breathe a little extra fire with provocative attitude into frame that just needs a little oomph.
Like all wheels from Zipp, the 808’s come with a bomber 5 year crash replacement policy at no extra charge. They’re laced up with Sapim® CX-Ray spokes from Belgium, run on precision bearings from Switzerland, and we love that the Hubs are machined here in the USA.
