The Zipp 101 wheel set incorporates the first aluminum rim to use a Toroidial shape and is fully built in the USA. Believe it or not the new shape contributes a noticeable aerodynamic advantage over traditional v-shaped box aluminum rims. Our first impression was that this is a stable, super solid, and stiff wheel. After months of testing we have nothing but love for the ride of the 101 and they look especially good on those classic round tubed frames we tend to have kicking around the shop. Not to single out the carbon chassis, but we think the Zipp 101’s are a great addition to today’s more articulate turbulence-taming frames as well. Sometimes, for better or worse, we have to admit we hold an addiction to metal bikes. In the end, since the styling is timeless and the performance is top notch this is a wheel we would choose as an everyday horse, an upgrade over stock OEM hoops, or as a compliment to any dream bike in the Above Category quarry of endless dream bikes.
Like all wheels from Zipp, the 101’s come with a bomber 5 year crash replacement policy at no extra charge. They’re laced up with Sapim® CX-Ray spokes from Belgium and run on precision bearings from Switzerland. The Hubs are machined here in the USA, and if you think you might like to upgrade to carbon hoops, the 101’s will get you half way there since all of Zipps wheels share the same hub. Only the spoke count varies. Overall weight of the set is 1527g.
