Details
When you’re designing a garment for events where every 100th of a second counts it’s got to be perfect. When you’re designing that suit for the world’s best time trial rider—Fabian Cancellara--to wear in the Olympics, the details get even more crucial.
Starting with their Assos Ergonomic Pattern Design II (AEPD II) fit philosophy, Assos created a suit that was designed to feel fast when sitting on a bike. Wedge yourself into a CS.Uno AeroChronosuit and, if you’re standing in front of the mirror, it’ll feel less than comfortable as it pulls in many strange directions. But hop on your TT rig in the CS.Uno and you’ll feel it click into place. Then you’re going fast sitting still.
Assos has created the CS.Uno from multiple types of material, each is just right for the area of the suit where it is utilized. In the upper half of the suit where it needs to be ultra form fitting, Assos has specified a material they call A.Plethon which is favored for its four-way stretch, high breathability and ultra low volume. On the thighs, they’ve used a combination of their top-shelf A.430 in the crotch and inner thigh areas for good support, compression and breathability. On the outer thighs, where aerodynamics are critical, they’ve specified the suit with a new air resistant, low volume Lycra (that is apparently without a name).
Tucked inside the crotch of the CS.Uno is Assos’ new Uno_S5 insert. Similar in many ways the insert found in the FI.13_S5 short, the Uno insert is built using Assos’ new dimpled waffle material for increased breathability, heightened ergonomics and lower volume. A totally unique ergonomic cut means the pad places less pressure on the genitals, especially important for the aggressive position used on most time trial bikes. One thing is sure, the S5_Uno pad is of higher quality and performance than you’ll find in any other one-piece suit.
The Swiss attention to details is more apparent here than perhaps on any other Assos product: zero rise collar, full length zipper, finger loops to keep the sleeves properly taught, refined leg grippers, three rear pockets (a middle radio pocket and two slash side pockets) and excellent graphics.
Is the CS.Uno something you need? We’re not sure. Is it something you want? Hell yes.
