The drumroll please……….
Incredible two-layer, dimpled FI.13 elastic interface pad for all time comfort. A.430 fabric in the side panels for outstanding breathability and moisture transfer. A.431 fabric in the inner thigh for increased compression and durability. Open mesh along the stomach and up the bib straps for reduced pressure and enhanced cooling, static reducing, carbon-enhanced webbing between the bib straps to reduce static, refined leg grippers, revised rubberized Assos icon, over-the-top packaging that includes small jars of Assos’ legendary chamois cream and cleanser. Yes. All there.
In fact, we could write a book about the unique technical features of the FI.13_S5, but the two questions that most people coming into our shop want answered are: A.) How different do they feel on the bike and, B.) Are they really worth $300+?
We’ll tackle ‘A’ first: They feel different and better than any short you’ve ever worn—including its predecessor, the TK. The S5’s feel great in the first five minutes or first hour, but these shorts really kick after hour five or a ride when you notice that you haven’t been shifting around in your shorts and on your saddle looking for a comfortable spot. That’s because the S5’s fit better than any shorts we’ve ever worn, a fact which you can attribute to Assos AEPD II ergonomic patterning system and the use of Assos’ new A431 fabric in strategic areas. AEPD II allows Assos to completely do away with the idea of ‘panels’ in a short and replaces it with perfectly positioned smaller pieces of material. The new A431 textile has been designed to be more compressive than A430 and to have less stretch, which helps to keep the Assos pad in place. Slide a pair of S5’s on and you’ll feel A431 at work in the hip and crotch area where small swaths of different types of Lycra wrap in a way that mimics your body’s natural form and compliments the pedaling motion.
As for question B.) Are they worth over $300? What kind of a price can you put on having an incredible ride? For us, there’s no question. We’ll cut back on a lot of other things if we have to, but second guessing our short choice as we head out for a an all-day Sonoma County epic isn’t something we’re willing to do. The S5 is the flagship short from the world’s premiere cycling clothing manufacturer. It’ll make your best rides even better and give you piece of mind any time you drop onto the saddle.
