The jumping off point in the Assos’ short line, the new FI.Uno_S5 relies on the same ‘S5’ concepts as the two more expensive shorts in the line, but features a fit and performance that is more suited to riders looking for comfort first and all-out performance second. For example, the Uno has less overall compression throughout the thigh and crotch area than an FI.13 short, which de-tunes the performance aspect, but actually feels more comfortable on shorter rides.
Fabricated largely from Assos A.430 fabric, the Uno has what Assos describes as a six-panel design, one that was developed using their AEPD II (Advanced Ergonomic Pattern Design) system for the perfect fit while sitting in the saddle. The pattern used through the crotch and around the thighs is less aggressive than on the FI.13 and, when combined with a pair of almost traditional bib straps, the overall fit and feel of the Uno is closer to what most people know as a good pair of bib shorts.
The best ting about the Uno_S5, and one that isn’t immediately apparent when you slip them on for the first time, is how awesome the newly designed insert is. Similar in many ways the insert found in the FI.13_S5 short, the Uno insert is built using Assos’ new dimpled waffle material for increased breathability, heightened ergonomics and lower volume. Although this is Assos’ entry-level short, the pad is of higher quality and performance than you’re likely to find in the top-level short from any other manufacturer.
