Pro Mechanic Position Available at Above Category
posted May 8, 2012 by Chad
Above Category has a position open for a full time head mechanic. Besides the normal prerequisites like being a great mechanic, having a good positive attitude, possessing good communication skills and being adept at learning new things, we are looking for someone who is driven, wants to be in a position to grow and more importantly help streamline the service center and assist in coming up with new and more efficient procedures.
But first off, we are looking for someone who…
…knows their way around high end, high performance road bikes. Pictured above is an example of the bikes we have in line to get built or maintained. These are not the kind of bikes that get slapped together one after another. It takes time and attention to detail…
…which results in bikes that turn out exactly like the intended customer had in mind.
…knows their way around time trial and triathlon bikes. These bikes can be a bit more tricky and the owners train all year for that one or two (or more) main events, the bike needs to be clean, shift perfectly, brake precisely which help make it as fast as it can be…
…can build, tune and maintain performance cross country mountain bikes. This is a smaller portion of what we build at Above Category but just as important to get right.
…even knows their way around specialty bikes like this Moots CoMooter. This is not the norm here, but with the Rohloff internal geared hub and generator hub it takes a bit more skill to set up correctly. Cable routing and fender setup can seem like simple things, but done incorrectly are frustrating when riding and unpleasant to look at.
…can build an older bike as well as a new one. Or, if not at least ask the right questions to figure it out.
…can build a new high performance, carbon track bike,
as well as a more classic but just as high performance steel one.
…can make sense of all of this,
and this, and have it come out perfect,
like this.
…is not afraid of this tool and uses it all the time.
…knows how to instal and maintain training tools like the SRM power meter pictured here.
…really knows how to wrap bars.
…really knows how to glue on tubulars, including all prep,
and installation, weather it for a jr. racer , road bike
or mountain bike.
…can prep a frame for the build.
…can find out why that bike is creaking.
…can keep the bikes clean and ready for the next race or Sunday ride.
…can build a really good, sturdy and long lasting wheel.
…knows what this frame is. OK, you don’t have to know that, but you’d get bonus points!
And lastly and maybe most importantly, you have to like the shop dog.
As you can see we are looking for someone who really knows high performance bicycles, and possesses the attention to detail to build them correctly. We have our own ways of doing this so you’d have to be willing to possibly learn new ways of doing things or be able to offer a good argument as to why your way is better in which case we love learning new things as well!
There are many benefits to working at Above Category. Here are a few:
- The shop is located in one of the best and most picturesque areas for riding, anywhere.
- We have close relationships with many of the best names in cycling.
- We put a huge emphasis on product knowledge which means lots of time for riding and trying out new equipment
- We are a growing company and as such will have many more opportunities for all employees in the future.
In closing we want to mention that you don’t have to have a long history of working in bike shops or the industry in general as we tend to do things differently anyhow. But you do need to have a strong capacity in all the above and more than anything be willing to learn the things you don’t know.
Please send your resume to chad@abovecategorycycling.com. We hope to hear from you soon!
